Meet Our Donors

Emmett & Mary Logan

Emmett & Mary Logan

The humble beginnings of Emmet Logan鈥檚 life led him to develop an early sense of stewardship. Mr. Logan鈥檚 family鈥檚 financial circumstances meant there was no money for college, but the benefaction of an uncle who had lost his eldest son made educational opportunities available. From his youth in Jersey City to his eventual career as an executive for United Parcel Service, Mr. Logan has always looked for ways to help those less fortunate.

Together with his wife, Dr. Mary Logan, he founded the Emmet and Mary Logan Assistance Program, which provides ten scholarships annually to full-time students, with preference given to single mothers or minority students who have demonstrated financial need in order to remain in school.

Mr. and Dr. Logan garner much gratification from their efforts to help students overcome hurdles. They have collected over 70 notes and cards of thanks from recipients, each of which bring them much satisfaction.

"In the 30 years of the program, we have received 8 to 10 thank you notes and letters.  Their back stories are inspirational and often bordering on heroic.  It has been a blessing to give them a leg up in pursuit of a better life." 鈥 Emmet and Mary Logan

Ollie & Wanda Sweeney

Ollie & Wanda Sweeney

Wanda and Ollie Sweeney retired to Pinehurst in 1999. Ollie had spent a 30-year career with IMB and Wanda had worked for many years as a 2nd through 6th grade teacher. Being completely retired didn鈥檛 suit either of the Sweeney鈥檚 well and within a year both had found part-time employment engaging in activities they each loved. An avid golf enthusiast, in 1999 Ollie began working as a golf rules officiator. He has worked officiating local tournaments and officiating tournaments with the NCAA and the Carolinas PGA both in NC and around the country. Wanda was naturally drawn from retirement back to education. Her brother Harlan McCaskill had spent his career as a professor and the Dean of the Continuing Education Department at 起点传媒, and Wanda has many fond memories of visiting Harlan and the 起点传媒 campus. Wanda began working part time helping in the SCC Learning Center with GED Program students.

Wanda said that GED students are truly inspiring. She told the story of a woman she worked with in the 2009-10 school year who completed her GED while working the night shift full-time at Walmart, taking care of a family, and supporting her husband鈥檚 military service. Wanda said this woman鈥檚 determination to have her GED completed and seeing her accomplish her goal in the face of so many obstacles was what Wanda thought was so special about Sandhills.

Each of the Sweeney鈥檚 seven endowed scholarships was created with special meaning to Ollie and Wanda.

The Goins family has been an anchor in the Southern Pines/Pinehurst, NC area as well as numerous other locations where they have lived. The Goins family will continue to uplift others because in order for our nation to be a world super-power, the family must first be strong to subsequently impact neighborhoods, communities, counties, states, and ultimately the nation.

Our aim is to assist a student in completing an associate degree, which will facilitate the student and future generations obtaining financial freedom. It is our prayer that through these acts of love no family is left behind.

The Goins Gifts, INC Scholarship Fund was established in 2018 by Morris and Yolanda Goins in order to economically empower a single parent to financial independence. The Goins Gifs, INC Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving Sandhills Community College student enrolled in any academic discipline. Selection is based on highest need and potential for success in the program.
