Kickstart your journey in the medical field at Æðµã´«Ã½ in August. From EMT Basic and Pharmacy Technician to Medical Administrative Assistant and more, our programs are tailored to prepare you for certification exams and entry-level positions.

"EMT Basic" prepares students to provide emergency care for the sick and injured. Students will learn to respond to a variety of emergency medical situations. Upon successful completion, the student can sit for the state certification exam. This course requires a copy of your high school or GED diploma by the first night of class. Held Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and one Saturday per month, August 19-December 12, from 6-10 pm, this class will cost $180 plus a $5 tech fee, a $31 uniform fee, and a clinical fee.

"Central Sterile Processing" will teach you to apply the principles of sterilization and disinfection in the workplace, as well as the principles of distribution of instruments and supplies. Explore preparation, storage, quality assurance, and inventory management. This class prepares students for the Sterile Processing Technician certification offered by CSPD. Held in a hybrid format, Wednesdays in the classroom, August 21-December 11 from 6–9 pm, and 3 hours a week online, this class will cost $197.50 plus the cost of the text.

"CPR for Healthcare Providers" is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR and other lifesaving skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. Held Saturday, August 24, from 8:30 am-12:30 pm, this class will cost $50 plus a $5 card fee.

"Pharmacy Technician" will prepare you for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam and entry-level employment. Topics include technical procedures for preparing and dispensing prescriptions, packaging and labeling, controlled substance procedures, inventory control, pharmacy calculations, and over-the-counter drugs. Upon completion, students will be able to perform basic supervised dispensing techniques in a community pharmacy setting. The prerequisite for this course is WorkKeys Math Level 3. Held in a hybrid format, Tuesdays in the classroom, August 20-December 11 from 6–9:30 pm, and 3 hours a week online, this class will cost $197.50 plus the cost of the text. 

"Electronic Health Records" are portable records of a patient’s healthcare experience. Using a variety of EHR models. Topics include the historical background of medical records, legal/ethical principles, patient flow, scheduling, and call processing. Qualifies student to take the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) exam. The prerequisite for this course is a high school diploma or GED to take the CEHRS exam. Held in an online format from August 20-December 17, this class will cost $195 plus the cost of the text.

In "EKG Technician," students will become a Certified Electrocardiogram Technician (EKG) with ASPT. Study the anatomy and physiology of the heart, the pulmonary system (lungs), the electrical impulses that make the heart pump and contract, and the segments, waves, and intervals of a 12-lead EKG. An additional course will be offered August 20-December 17, from 6–9 pm. Tuesdays will be on Zoom, with an in-person lab on Wednesdays, October 30-December 17, and 3 hours a week online.

In "Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)," students will learn patient registration, telephone, scheduling, medical records, accounts receivable, data entry, and medical claims. This class prepares individuals for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national certification exam offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Held in a hybrid format, Mondays in the classroom, August 19-December 16 from 6–9 pm, and 3 hours a week online, this class will cost $275.50 plus the cost of the text. An additional online course will be held Tuesdays on Zoom, August 20-December 17 from 6–9 pm, and 3 hours a week online.

In "Medical Terminology + A & P," students will study medical words and terms. Learn basic human anatomy and physiology for all body systems, laboratory medicine, pharmacology, elements of medical terms and names of major diseases, including terms used in physical exams, operative procedures, and diagnosis. The prerequisite for this course is a high school diploma or GED to take the CEHRS exam. Held in an online format, August 19-December 16, for approximately 6-8 hours a week online, this class will cost $195 plus the cost of the text.

In "Phlebotomy Technician," students will learn the skills necessary to draw blood specimens in various healthcare settings and blood donation centers. Topics include venipuncture, specimen handling, record-keeping, and the healthcare profession. The prerequisites for this class are WorkKeys Workplace Documents Level 4 and a signed Memo of Understanding and current immunizations. Students must contact Marta Kane for enrollment approval and registration at kanem@sandhills.edu. Held Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 20-December 17, and one Saturday class on September 21. Tuesday and Thursday classes will be held from 6–9:30 pm. Clinicals will be Monday-Friday, 8 am-4:30 pm, and the Saturday class from 8 am-4:30 pm. This class will cost $215.50 plus the cost of the text. An additional class will be offered at the Hoke Center on Monday and Wednesday, Aug 19-December 16, with one Saturday class on October 5. Monday and Wednesday classes will be held from 6–9:30 pm. Clinicals will be Monday-Friday, 8 am-4:30 pm, and the Saturday class from 8 am-4:30 pm.

"Medical Assisting Part 1" will include instruction in scheduling appointments, medical insurance, and computer operations administrative skills). As well as anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and basic math for medical office finance and pharmacology. The prerequisite for this class is a WorkKeys test with a level 3 or higher and the Math WorkKeys test with a level 4 or higher. If you have successfully completed college-level Math or English at a regionally accredited college, the WorkKeys exam is not required. "Nurse Aide Level 1" will prepare you to work as a Nurse Aide under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals by performing hands-on patient care. Successful completion prepares students for the State Board examination for NC NA Registry listing. Students must contact Marta Kane for enrollment approval and registration at kanem@sandhills.edu. Held during the evening at the Hoke Center, Monday and Wednesday, August 19-December 16, with clinicals on November 6-December 9. Class and lab will be held from 4–9 pm, and clinical will be held in Moore County from 3-8:30 pm. This class will cost $215.50 plus the cost of the text. Three additional courses will be offered on the Pinehurst campus. One course will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, August 19-December 16, from 8:30 am-2 pm for class and lab. Clinicals will be held November 6-December 9 from 7:30 am-1 pm. Another course will be held during the day on Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 20-December 17, from 8:30 am-2 pm for class and lab. Clinicals will be held November 2-December 17, from 7:30 am-1 pm. The final course will be offered in the evening, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, August 20-December 17, from 4–9 pm. Clinicals will be held November 2-December 17 from 3–8:30 pm.

"Nurse Aide Level 2" provides training in advanced procedures. Emphasis is placed on sterile techniques, wound and tracheostomy care, respiratory procedures, catheterization, irrigation, and ostomy care. This is a Hybrid/Blended course – reliable internet, computer, or laptop are required for the course. Students will need to use Chrome or Firefox web browsers for the online instruction to access Moodle. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the candidate is eligible to apply for a listing as an NA II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Students must be on the NC NA I Registry by September 30. Students must contact Marta Kane for enrollment approval and registration at kanem@sandhills.edu. The class will be held on Mondays and Fridays in the classroom. Mondays will be from 4–7 pm, and Fridays will be from 8 am to noon. Plus, 3 hours online per week through October 11. There will be one Wednesday class on October 16 from 3–6 pm. Classroom hours will end, and clinicals will begin on October 18-December 16. Clinicals will be Mondays 4–8 pm and Fridays 8 am-2:30 pm.
